Sun’s out bub’s out!
Most babies love the beach. They get to cool off in the water and sink their hands into sand, which is a totally new experience for your little one.
Beach days can be tricky when you have a young baby. While they love the water, it’s important to keep them hydrated, fed and out of the sun. To help out, we’ve got a list of our top 6 tips for breastfeeding at the beach.
6 Tips for Breastfeeding at the Beach
1. Get the Right Swimwear!
Breastfeeding at the beach is pretty easy. Most swimsuits can easily be pulled aside to get access at feeding times, but that can destroy the elastics pretty quickly.
Don’t fret though – we now offer breastfeeding swimwear that’s ready for your next beach day!
Our breastfeeding swimwear features fold-away flaps that give you all the access you could want. They come with built-in support for your post-baby body, so they’re also flattering and comfortable.
We’ve crafted our swimsuits from two layers of high-quality, ultra-soft fabrics. These fabrics offer UPF50+ protection to keep your skin safe from the sun. The bottoms include a flirty cut, and the ruching around the bodice adds texture and boosts confidence on the sand.
Mad House Mums also stocks a range of breastfeeding swimsuits from Milky Dayz. They’re one of our favourite brands, and the prints are super fun! We even have the matching swimsuit for your little one.
2. Finish Your Outfit With a Broad Brim Hat
Hats are the perfect pairing for a breastfeeding swimsuit! The sky’s the limit here, but we love oversized broad brim hats for 2025. They’re trendy and super effective at keeping the sun off your scalp and shoulders.
The bigger the brim the better – your hat will also provide shade for your baby while they’re in your arms, so pick something that’s bigger than you think you need.
3. Bring Some Shelter With You
Spending all day in the sun is tough, whether you’re an adult or a newborn. The best thing you can bring to the beach is a bit of shelter.
There are lots of options on the market these days. Classic beach umbrellas are a good choice, or something like a CoolCabana is easy to set up. If you want a budget option, pop-up sun shelters can be found for a few bucks in most department stores.
4. Stay Comfy On the Sand
Your beach shelter isn’t complete until you’ve added comfort items.
We all know that breastfeeding is easiest when you’re feeling comfortable. Bringing a little beach chair provides support and gives you a place to relax during feeding times.
You should also consider bringing plenty of cool water and drinks, hydrating snacks and anything else you need to stay cool – like a misting bottle. These little touches can take the edge off the heat and help you and bub stay comfy.
5. Stay Hydrated
When the mercury climbs, you and your baby need to pay special attention to hydration. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and pack snacks that keep you hydrated. We recommend foods that are rich in electrolytes – like watermelon.
You can also try an electrolyte supplement like Hydrate Up. Hydrate Up tastes great and it’s an all-natural way for mums to stay hydrated in the hot weather.
If your baby is 100% breastfeed, you don’t need to give them water in hot weather!
Your baby gets all the hydration they need from breastmilk. If you’re headed to the beach, you should expect your baby to feed more often than usual. Packing a few bottles of pumped breastmilk can ensure that bub is getting enough liquid.
6. Find the Right Position
You’ve got all the gear – the big hat, nursing swimwear and a nice little shade tent. The last piece of the puzzle is your own comfort.
Breastfeeding in public can be tricky at the best of times. It’s even harder in the hot weather. Finding the right position can make all the difference. If you’re having trouble breastfeeding bub while at the pool or beach, try the following:
- Settle into your shade tent for extra privacy, or use light nursing wrap as a cover
- Place a nursing wrap in the crook of your arm so that you and bub aren’t sharing too much sticky body heat
- Check your baby’s skin temperature regularly – you can sponge them with lukewarm water to help keep them cool
- Try sitting up, lying down or propping yourself up on some towels and beach bags to find a comfortable spot.
The main thing is to stay out of direct sunlight. It’s too much heat for little bodies, and it will probably make your baby too uncomfortable to feed. If your baby takes bottles, that might be the easier option for your next beach day.
